Congress Needs Your Job Creation Ideas

With the unemployment rate stuck at 9.5 percent and no real sign of improvement on the near horizon, it is past time for Congress and the Administration to start getting serious about creating JOBS. That means putting a stop to the political gamesmanship. It calls for a collective rolling up the sleeves and getting down to the business of leading. It requires getting all hands on deck; pulling out all the stops; throwing open the flood gates; unleashing the hounds–or whatever cliché that’s appropriate to convey the sense of urgency needed to get Americans back to work.

Officially there are 14.6 million Americans out of work, however that number soars to 31 million if you include those involuntarily working part time and those who have simply given up looking for a job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In light of those startling numbers job creation has to be at the top of (and maybe the only thing on) everyone’s to do list in Washington.

I applaud House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for calling Congress back from its August recess to pass a $26 billion jobs bill sought by the states to avert massive teacher, police and fire layoffs that would have made an already awful situation even worse.

In addition, I’m heartened that manufacturing jobs increased by 36,000 in July, specifically in the auto and fabricated metals industries. According to the BLS, since December 2009 manufacturing employment has expanded by 183,000.

All of that’s good news, but it is far from enough. Much more needs to be done to create jobs to turn this economy around and to start bringing the unemployment numbers down.

Clearly, there’s no easy fix and there are no simple answers, especially when you consider the depth of this recession. Since the start of the recession in December 2007 the ranks of the unemployed have swollen by 8.2 million. In January 2008 the unemployment rate stood at 4.7 percent. Since then the economy has been steadily shedding jobs and the unemployment has ticked up and up—June 2008, 4.9%; Dec. 2008, 5.8%; April 2009, 7%; Nov. 2009, 9%; March 2010, 9.7%; and, July 2010, 9.5%. However, we have to stop wringing our hands and taking tentative half-measures to address the problem. Enough with relying solely on business tax credits or investments in green technologies to spark hiring and create jobs. Those initiatives will most likely bear fruit in the long-run, but America needs to return to work now.

The bottom line is that no one party and no one person have all the answers. That’s why I asking my readers to give me your suggestions for creating jobs, strengthening the economy, and most importantly putting Americans back to work.

I will take the best of your ideas and present them to key members of Congress. Maybe with an assist from you and me Congress can get serious and creative about creating jobs and putting people back to work.

i would like to see the CCC that FDR put into place activated immediately and working on infrastructure. Bridges,schools, roads, everything well you get it. it would be a great start. Muriel

If we really focused on our car, bus and truck transportation system with a goal of reducing our gas and diesel consumption by 50%, it would result in a transformation of our transportation systems and improvement in our economy.

By identifying the best technologies and supporting them we could both jump start our industrial production and also achieve the added benefit of reducing our oil dependence. For instance, the Ford Fusion Hybrid gets 50% better gas mileage than its gas only counterpart (39 mpg vs. 26 mpg). It is the best hybrid performance for a mid-sized car. To make this a car for everyone we need to equalize the price between the hybrid and gas only vehicle ($23,000 vs. $33,000). Given the choice most consumers, for virtually the same price, will acquire the hybrid because it gets 50% better gas mileage.

The City of Miami is running a Hybrid commuter bus between downtown Miami and downtown Fort Lauderdale. If hybrid buses make sense for other cities they should be acquired as quickly as possible.

T.Boone Pickens advocates using LPG gas to power our long haul trucks, as well as, rapidly upgrading our electric grid to provide the necessary infrastructure for the next generation of vehicles, battery powereed cars and trucks.

SUV’s and local delivery trucks, those driving under 150 miles between charges are ideal for converting to battery powered vehicles and reducing oil and diesel consumption, as well as pollution.

These are real capabilities we have today. There is no one group or one place that brings all of this information and ideas together. People of the US need to have a High Efficiency Vehicle Exchange. They need a place to see what we’re doing, and can do, to reduce oil consumption and jumpstart auto industry.

I advocate creating a company and website that works with companies and governments (local, state and federal) to be the beacon that promotes what is happening now and helps map out where we are going in the future to achieve this transformation of our transporation system.

Subsidies for Goods Manufactured on Domestic Patent: For consumer or capital goods (equipment) that are manufactured under a domestic patent

Duration: 5 years following the registration of the patent

Subsidy Amount/Type: 30% Discount on the cost of utilities (gas/oil, electricity, water) based on the patented products share in total output

100% Exemption for Value Added Tax: Any customer whether it’s a household or business that purchase a product manufactured under a domestic patent in USA should be required to pay no Value Added Tax for a period of 5 years

50% Exemption on government payroll taxes (social security deductions) for each net increase in the company payroll for a period of 5 years following $10,000 in revenue generated by the sale of the patented product

Job creation should be introduced and established as a quality and a selling proposition in the business world. Hence it
should act as a consumer demand. My point is:
If environmental friendliness can act as a
quality and a selling proposition in marketing, why shouldn’t “job friendliness”
act as same? Therefore: Businesses that create more jobs during times with high unemployment, start using your quality as a

1. job seeker logs to Mentor matching website and enters info on their job search, location, background, job interests.
2. website matches job seeker with 3 employed citizens who will mentor, encourage, assist job seeker for at least 2 months with job search. Mentors can link in person or via web for flexibility.
3. website posts success stories, allows folks to switch out mentors or job seekers as needed. mentors accrue points and post success methods.
4. People with resources helping people who need a hand. Personal one on one networking and mentorship.
5. Perhaps some background and security checks for safety for all concerned but otherwise that’s it.
