With an eye to creating high-paying jobs while also assisting American manufacturers compete and expand, the White House has committed more than $500 million to a national effort that will bring together industry, major engineering universities and the federal government to invest in cutting-edge technologies.

According to a White House press release, the President’s plan—Advance Manufacturing Partnership (AMP)—seeks to establish a partnership between government, industry and academia to “identify the most pressing challenges and transformative opportunities to improve the technologies, process and products across multiple manufacturing industries.”

To put it simply, the government is looking to invest money in emerging technologies, such as information technology, biotech and nanotech that will create good paying jobs and help U.S. manufacturers reduce costs, improve quality, and accelerate product development.

Initial AMP investments will focus on small high-powered batteries, advanced composites, metal fabrication, bio-manufacturing, robotics, and alternative energy.

The AMP, which is designed based on recommendations from a report—Ensuring Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing—issued by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, would leverage existing programs and proposals in the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Energy, Agriculture, Commerce National Science Foundation and other agencies to jump-start the effort.

In announcing the initiative President Obama said he is calling for the private sector, universities, and the government to join forces to “spark a renaissance of American manufacturing” that will develop the next generation of cutting-edge technology. “With these key investments, we can ensure that the United States remains a nation that ‘invents it here and manufactures it here’ and creates high-quality, good paying jobs for American workers.”
